Leaks or excessive consumption

If the consumption that occurs on your account is increased compared to the previous one, possibly it may be justified, if it is for the summer. If it is higher than, the corresponding period of last year, there is likely a leak from the plumbing of your premises, which must be repaired immediately. You can check for yourselves the possibility of a leakage, in the morning, before using any water, when the water tank is full and with the taps closed to see if the water meter is registering any consumption (if it turns). If it is turning, then there may be a leak and you need to call a plumber.

If a leakage is detected from your plumbing installations, you must submit an application at the offices of the Board to examine the possibility of reducing the billed amount, provided that the total consumption of the quarter is above 75 cubic meters, according to Article 22 of the Boards regulations, as detailed below:

(1) For any consumption or leakage after the water meter, the responsibility lies with the consumer.

(2) Subject to the provisions of paragraph (1), the Board has the discretion, in cases where the monthly consumption exceeds twenty-five (25) cubic meters, to reduce the bill of the consumers, upon proof that the water distribution pipe was leaking due to damage or wear which could not be traced by the consumer. However when the consumption does not exceed the consumption of the corresponding period of the previous year, the charge is considered normal:

Provided that, the minimum amount payable, in such a case, is the amount corresponding to a monthly consumption of twenty-five (25) cubic meters:

Provided further that, if the consumption exceeds the consumption of the corresponding period of the previous year, the difference is charged at a price determined by the Board (currently € 1,00), depending on the wholesale price of water by the Government:

Provided even further that, in cases where after reducing the bill, the bill remains very high, the Board, following the criteria established from time to time, may charge the difference at half the price set by the procedures described in this paragraph.

(3) Subject to the provisions of paragraphs (1) and (2) the Board has the discretion, in cases where the monthly consumption exceeds thirty (30) cubic feet, as well as the consumption of the corresponding period of the previous year, to reduce the billed amount, when it is not possible to determine the reasons for the excessive consumption:

Provided that, the difference between the actual consumption and that of the corresponding period of last year, will be charged at a price determined by the Board, according to its cost for the provision of water supply services

The Board is responsible for the supply of water up to the water meter (the central control meter control in the case of apartment buildings and residential complexes). For any interception of water after the water meter, the Board cannot take responsibility. Consumers, however, should inform the Board, tel 24200549, to investigate the matter and they should immediately report the incident to the Police.

If the meter is turning without consuming water in the premises (at least for half an hour), there may be a leak from the plumbing of your premises. Immediately call a plumber and close the supply of water from your meter to avoid further consumption which will be billed. You can check for yourselves the possibility of leakage in the morning, when the water tank is full, before using water and the taps are closed, to see if the meter continues to turn.

In the case where an underground external leakage is detected, the whole installation from the meter to the tank must be replaced with an above surface installation. You then need to notify the Board in order to verify that the leak has stopped and to examine the possibility of reducing your Bill.
