Historical Overview

1965

  • Establishment of the Larnaka Water Board.
  • Drilling two boreholes in the Tremithos and Alethriko riverbeds, yielding 5,000 m3 per day.
  • Construction of water reservoirs of capacity 1,800 m3.
  • Installation of the main water pipeline of diameter 380mm from the water reservoirs to the city.

1966

  • Construction of additional water reservoirs of capacity 900 m3
  • Installation of the main pipeline, ring type, for water distribution in the city.
  • Extension of the main pipeline, of diameter 380 mm, North of the city until the oil tanks.

1967

  • Replacement of the water distribution network in the city and all house connections.
  • Replace all “sakkorafia” (a measure of water) with water meters.
  • Extension of the main pipeline, of diameter 380 mm, North of the city until the Sovereign British Bases (Dhekelia Garrison).

1977

  • Completion of the construction of new water reservoirs of capacity of 8,000 m3
  • Improvement/replacement of the network and installation of water meters in the former Turkish_Cypriot quarters of Larnaka.

1983

  • Cooperation with Commercial Banks and Cooperative Societies for the collection of water bills on behalf of the Water Board.

1985

  • Introduction of a system for monitoring and locating leaks from the water supply pipe network.

1986

  • The billing system was computerized.

1989

  • Construction of the Water Board’s self-owned Office Building.

1990

  • Adoption of an automatic bills payment system via Commercial Banks and Cooperative Societies.

1991

  • Installation of a new water pipeline, of diameter 700 mm, from the water reservoirs to the Kamares area.
  • Installation and operation of a Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition System of the water supply network.

1995

  • Use of handheld devices for the recording of water consumptions.
  • Digitization of property development plans and topographical maps with all the information concerning the water supply network.

1998

  • Study for the improvement / upgrade / extension / rehabilitation of the water supply System.

2002

  • Design of a prototype information technology platform for the Water Board in collaboration with the University of Cyprus.
  • Extensionof the main water pipeline, of diameter 700 mm, from the Kamares area until the Larnaka-Nicosia and Larnaka-Limassol road junction.

2003

  • Introduction of audio-electronic equipment systems for monitoring and detecting unreported leaks.
  • Installation of a main water pipeline, South of the city, of diameter 150 mm, from the Makenzy area to Spyros Beach through the Larnaka airport premises.

2004

  • Installation of a new billing system.

2006

  • Completion of the installation of a new main water pipeline, of diameter 500 mm, from the Larnaka - Nicosia and Larnaka – Limassol road junction until the Larnaka Port (General Timayia Avenue).
  • Completion of an occupational risk assessment study and development of a comprehensive safety management system.

2007

  • Preparation of the Water Board for the adoption of the euro after Cyprus' accession in the EMU from 1-1-2008.
  • Development of the Water Board Website.

2008

  • Transition from the Cyprus Pound to the Euro.
  • Implementation of a study to evaluate the advantages/disadvantages of a possible merger of the Larnaka Water Board with the Larnaka Sewerage & Drainage Board.
  • Completion of the replacement of the main water pipeline, of diameter 300 mm, along the Larnaka-Dhekelia road from the Livadia roundabout up to the Nautical Club.
  • Division of the Larnaka network area in new smaller zones (total 21)

2009

  • Renovation / refurbishment of the reception area at the Water Board’s offices.
  • Installation of a fire detection and alarm system in the offices of the Water Board.
  • Replacement of the water meter recording system with modern portable handheld computers.

2010

  • Installation of a Closed Circuit Surveillance System system in the Water Board’s offices.
  • Completion of the replacement of the main water pipeline, of diameter 300 mm, along the Larnaka-Dhekelia road from the Port roundabout until the Livadia roundabout.

2011

  • The Water Board is awarded with the Business Excellence EFQM "Committed to Excellence in Europe” Certification.
  • Upgrade / expansion of the Board’s existing Surveillance, Control and Data Acquisition System.
  • Completion of a study of the current water network and future needs and development of hydraulic models and geographic information system (GIS).
  • Replacement/upgrade of existing accounting software system (accounting, warehouse, payroll and fixed assets).

2013

  • Impairment of the Water Board’s deposits with the Banks of Cyprus and Laiki
  • Pilot application of the walk-by smart metering technology
  • Establishment of the Cyprus Association of Water and Sewerage Boards

2014

  • Introduction of a GPS fleet management system
  • Feasibility study for the application of Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) technology
  • Award of the Water Board with the Green Public Procurement award for purchases in the category of computer equipment and household electrical appliances

2015

  • Installation of a new IP PBX Telephone System
  • Award of the Water Board for its general policy in relation to the implementation of Green Public Procurement

2016

  • Installation of electronic time and attendance system
  • Construction of new fencing at the site of the Water Board’s water reservoirs.
  • Award of the Water Board for its general policy in relation to the implementation of Green Public Procurement

2017

  • Installation of an integrated commercial and technical management information system that includes new softwares for water meter reading, billing and management of receivables, customer service, network and asset management and payroll.
  • Signing of cooperation protocol with the Technical University of Cyprus.
  • Award of the Water Board with the Green Public Procurement award for purchases in the categories of "Tires" and "Air Conditioners".

2018

  • Repair and maintenance of the existing water reservoirs of the Water Board.
  • Award of the Water Board with the Green Public Procurement award for purchases in the category of "Interior Lighting".

2019

  • WBL participation in the research project "Smart Water 2020" for the purpose of introducing innovative technologies for monitoring and control of water networks to reduce water losses due to leakages and faults.
  • Award of the Water Board with the Green Public Procurement award for purchases in the category of "Vehicles".

2020

  • Integration of the Municipality of Aradippou to the WBL
  • Study and preparation of construction drawings for the construction of new water reservoirs.

2022

  • Integration of the Municipality of Livadia to the WBL
